Working for Clean Water and Adequate Sanitation

Les Anglais, Haiti

Since 2008, EWB-Portland has been working to improve drinking water and sanitation in the community of Les Anglais, at the southwest tip of Haiti. This project has been developed in partnership with Our Saviors Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Lake Oswego, OR, and Passion For Haiti, a local NGO.

Clean Water

In 2010 EWB installed chlorinators to the Basin Simbi and Caiman reservoirs after water quality testing revealed that contaminated water sources, most likely due to animal waste and a deficit of properly sited latrines. We also trained local plumbers and chlorinator operators how to operate the system and ensure adequate chlorine levels.

Sanitation

Health assessments conducted by EWB in 2008 and 2010 have indicated that a 65% of the community lacks latrine access entirely and uses the fields, river, or ocean instead. Our goal and approach is to enable the community to expand their sanitation capacity without the need for outside assistance.  Our team built a pilot latrine at the community's hurricane shelter in 2013 as part of this effort.
